This week’s news is all about Detroit Auto Show, or lack thereof. Now it seems that Honda has canceled its press conference for the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. So, at least they are showing up, just no flashy press conference to unveil the production version of the Insight Hybrid.

The Detroit Auto Show in 2009 is getting smaller. It has been reported that four manufactures has pulled out, Rolls-Royce, Land Rover, Ferrari and Suzuki. Now it looks like number five will be Mitsubishi. Porsche pulled out of the Detroit show in 2006.

Just as GM sells some stocks in a company, Ford is now following. Ford has reduced its ownership in Mazda from 33% to 13%. This will give Ford about $540 million in the bank and will end a 12 year control of Mazda. Ford will continue its agreements and partnership with Mazda.

Time to update the diagram, again! GM is going to sell the remaining 3 percent stake in Suzuki. This is about 16.4 million shares of common stock that GM is going to put on the open market. That should be equal to about $230 million back to cash for GM.

Now that it looks like GM can’t get enough money for a merger with Chrysler, in steps-in South Korea’s Hyundai Motor. Hyundai is in talks with Cerberus Capital Management about acquisition of Jeep brand and possibly other assets. However, Cerberus would prefer to sell off all of Chrysler than to break up the company.

According to Automotive News, GM may run out of cash by mid-2009. GM has reported for the five straight losing quarts. GM had $21 billion on June 30, but now is down to $16.2 billion. With the economy and credit market turmoil, it’s going to be tough for GM to get back on its feet. [...]
