Bob Lutz has come out at the New York International Auto Show and said the new Camaro could be powered by a four-cylinder if gas prices keep rising. Yes, you read that right, a 4-banger in a Camaro. But, this is the 2.0 liter turbocharged that kicks out 260-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Unlike in the past pony cars with eco-motors, I’ll take this one! Good gas mileage, and still kicks a Mustange V6 ass (the current Stang as a 210-hp V6). Other motors mention was the 3.6 liter V6 that produces 304-hp from the Caddy CTS. But I know what everyone wants to hear, we’ll all be lusting after the Camaro SS with a possible 550-hp supercharged 6.2 liter from Caddy CTS-V.
One thing I did find interesting was that GM IS NOT going to make the Camaro a cheap car. GM will be marketing the Camaro as a premium alternative to the Mustang and will be equipped as such. Lutz was quoted about how the Camaro will have a sophisticated independent rear suspension and nicer interior then what’s in the Mustang. With Mustang’s solid rear-end and boring black plastic inside, it shouldn’t be that hard. However, competition from the 2009 Dodge Challenger with a V6 or the smaller V8 could be an interesting alternative.
