The Smart car might be new in the U.S., but they have been around for a few years in Europe and the U.K. I guess with the gas prices rising in every corner of the world, would a Smart Police car work? According to velocenews.com, London Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is taking park of a trial of fully electric Smart cars.
The Smart Ed (Electric Drive) is powered by electric motors and using a standard (for the U.K.) three-pin plug, plus it’s zero emissions. They claim they are getting the equivalent of about300 miles per gallon.
I guess I can understand why London would need such a car. It’s small enough to drive on the sidewalk, and they don’t drive large SUV or large RWD cars like in the States. I guess they drive around to make people feel save, but I don’t see this as a chase car. However, as much as I like the little car for what it is, I don’t see NYPD trading in there Ford Crown Vic’s for a Smart Ed. Zero emissions or not, there’s parts of Harlem I’d be afraid someone picking up the car and put in a dumpster.
Oh, make sure you check out thousands of book titles about all things automotive at Veloce Publishing.
