According to AutoWeek, Volkswagen’s new Jetta TDI cars are just about sold out before they hit the showroom. Why? Even though diesel is close to $5 a gallon, most see the advantage of a diesel over the gas counterpart. The TDI gets 33 to 35% better gas mileage, in the Jetta that equals 29 mpg city and 40 highway! Most VW diesel last longer, 200,000 to 300,000 miles, plus the new TDI is 50 state emissions friendly. However, I think when it comes down to it, I think it’s the performance you get from a diesel over the a hybrid or fuel-efficient small car is what are bring people around. Yes it’s true that you’re going to pay about $2,000 more for the diesel, but if you do a lot of driving and want gas mileage of a hybrid or fuel-efficient car, then paying a little extra for perforce is worth it. At 235 ft-lbs of torque, that’s more then what’s in the GTI. And now that VW offers free scheduled maintenance, hard not to look at the Jetta TDI.
Look for the 2009 Jetta TDI in your VW showroom starting late August. Price for the sedan starts at $22,640 while the station wagon (called SportWagen) at $24,240, including shipping.
