Thanks to the new standards, BMW will be bringing back the 4-bangers. Look for turbocharged (twin?) 4-cylinder 3-Series in the U.S. by spring 2012. BMW is also looking at X1 and X3 with 4-bangers, along with the 1-Series.
The changes come because of the new federal guidelines which ask automakers to improve the fuel-economy of their fleets by 5 percent annually. This will help the automakers make the national standard of 35.5 mpg in the 2016 model year.
