BMW is going to allow drivers to copy maps and other information directly to their navigation systems from their full on-board Internet access. The service will operate on the EDGE mobile network (too bad it doesn’t also work with the faster 3G networks).
This will work from the iDrive control system, were the Web can be surfed via a small joystick mouse. And if you’re thinking people can’t drive with a phone, how will they do the Web? Don’t worry, Internet can only be used at speeds of less than 3 mph. However, if the vehicle has a rear DVD system, passengers in the back seat can access the Web at any speed.
This system is currently being offered in Europe, but look for it to come to the States soon.
