Dodge is taking the new Challenger to the limits. Drag racing limits that is. At the Mile-High Nationals in Colorado, Dodge showed off two Challenger “drag-race-package” prototypes. Dodge plans on building 100 cars to meet NHRA requirements, starting late summer with a price in the low $30,000 range.
The drag-race-package Challenger will be eligible to race in three Eliminator categories, Comp, Super Stock and Stock.
The package isn’t much of a package, it takes off more than it puts in, but that’s okay. The Mopar boys take a SRT8 Challenger and give it a diet of about 1000 lbs. The car doesn’t have HVAC, airbags, rear seats and other parts not needed for street driving. Plus composite lift-off hood, polycarbonate door windows, a lightweight cooling module with electric fan, manual rack-and-pinion steering and lightweight front brake assembly. This car is mean and meant for the drag strip.
You do have a choice of automatic or manual transmission connected to two Hemi power plants, 6.1-liter and 5.7-liter V8’s, plus a 5.9-liter Magnum Wedge.
