This always happens when I’m away, but just in case you missed it: Fiat is going to acquire 35% stake in Chrysler. This would give Fiat manufacturing capacity and a U.S. sales network along with other manufactures in Europe. Chrysler will gain Fiat’s small, less-polluting cars and gain more distribution in Europe and Latin America.
It’s reported that the deal involves no cash investment and could increase to 55% in the future. All shares are from majority owner Cerberus, Daimler AG still has 19.9 percent in Chrysler, which they are trying to sell.
So the question really is: What does this mean to the U.S.? Will FIAT finally get started again in the land of the free? Will we see beautiful FIAT 500’s? Or more sporty Abarth? Will they bring Lancia? Or will we end up with re-badge 500 as a dumbed down Chrysler for the U.S. market? Only time will tell! (I’m hoping not for the ladder!)
