Looks like the U.S. buyer are getting smarter. According to Automotive News, Ford F-150, America’s favorite vehicle since 1991, has been dethroned by Toyota. Not by one car, but by two. According to preliminary sales figures, Ford Motor Co. sold 42,973 F-series trucks in May. Toyota Motor Corp., on the other hand, sold 52,826 Corollas and 51,291 Camry. The F series truck fell 30.6 percent in May, while Corolla sales rose 12.4 percent, yet it’s down 9.5 percent for the first five months compared to a year ago. Camry sales remain flat.
I’m guessing the average U.S. buyer has decided it doesn’t need a pick-up after all. And a small to mid-size sedan will work a lot better at getting close to and over 30 mpg compared to the F-150’s, what 16 mpg on the highway?

Edit: This is what happens when you don’t wait till all the numbers come in. Since writing this, Honda claimed the top prize with the Civic. Accord is now ahead of F-150 for sales in May. The new totals for May look like this: 42,973 F-series, 43,728 Accord, 52,826 Corollas, 51,291 Camry and 53,299 Civic.
