Karmann filed for insolvency in Germany today. For those wondering who Karmann is, ever heard of the Karmann Ghia? Yeap, they were still around doing a lot of work building cabrio in Europe and U.S. But hard times caught up to them after trying a restructuring plan in September 2008 didn’t work.
Besides the VW Beetle coupe called Karmann Ghia, they help develop the retractable hardtop roof first introduced in the Mercedes-Benz SLK.
However it should be noted that Karmann USA has had a successfully restructure and makes convertible tops for Ford, Chrysler, GM and VW. The company last week started a new aftermarket program to rebuild and restore convertible tops in North America.
