For those that watch Top Gear will recognize what Jay Leno is doing. Starting tonight (Friday night 9/18/09), he’s going to challenge celebrities to set fast lap on a track outside the studio. This is known as “Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car”. I guess with this being California, instead of using a low horse powered, cheap reasonably priced car, Leno is using an electric-powered Ford Focus. Ford does plan on selling this car in 2011.
Even though it’s an eclectic car, the specs look promising. For one thing, it’s from the European Focus, not the crappy US model, and the electric motor is rated at 141 hp and 236 ft-lb of toque. Plus the battery pack is placed in the car to have 50/50 weight distribution, which will make it more fun around the track. The Ford Focus shares springs and shocks from the European Focus RS, while Leno added the Recaro racing seats, five-point safety belts and roll cage.
First up in the “Green Car Challenge” will be Drew Barrymore. No word if there will be a “The Stig” or not.
