With Honda canceling the new S2000 and Acura nicking the new NSX project, it great to read something exciting coming out of Japan. Edmunds Inside Line is reporting that Mazda is working hard on a new RX-7! Mazda is claiming they are working on a front midship-mounted rotary engine. The new twin-rotor engine will be larger from the current 13B 654cc x 2 configuration to the new 16X 800cc x 2. The engine will be normally aspirated and produce close to 270 hp and get 20 percent better fuel economy. Look for the new RX-7 to come with a new twin-clutch, two-pedal six-speed transmission. Mazda is currently trying to put it on a diet to the run-way weight of 2,640-pound range.
Also, look for a new RX-8 to come out soon and to be called RX-9. Does this mean the RX-8 will become more of a sport coupe with new name change and the RX-7 being more of a sport car?
No word on when we will see the RX-7 or the RX-8/RX-9 in the U.S.
