We’ve seen cars, SUV and pick-up trucks slowly turning into hybrids. KTM is going to make an all electric motorcycle, the times are changing. To prove the change, I read there is going to be a prototype hybrid semi-truck!
ArvinMeritor is developing a hybrid in collaboration with Navistar and Cummins. Today they announced they presented Wal-Mart the prototype truck with the first Meritor(R) diesel-electric drivetrain. The Meritor is a dual-mode hybrid drivetrain. While acceleration and staying under 48 miles/hour, the truck is on electric motor with power from lithium ion batteries. The batteries are recharged through regenerative braking and/or an engine-driven generator. As it accelerator closer to highway speeds, the drivetrain phases to diesel-powered. The nice thing about the system is the ability to run in zero-emission mode in places that are restricted, like a port or urban area. Also, the batteries eliminated the need for engine idling during overnight rest period, with accessories such as air or AC compressors convert to batteries then engine.
