Its official, VW is NOT bringing over the Scirocco to the U.S. Tom Wegehaupt, VW’s America’s public relations coordinator told its dealers that a business case couldn’t be made, most likely it would take sales of the new GTI.
To help your sadness, because I feel it too, look for more info on the R20, the R32 replacement. The R32 was a GTI with a 3.2-liter V6 with 250-hp and AWD. This is a great car, but really lacked performance because of the extra weight of the V6 and AWD. The R20 will use the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in the current GTI, but tuned to 270-hp and AWD. This will give the new R a top speed at a governor 155 and 0-60 times in the low to mid-five seconds.
I’m sad that VW isn’t going to be over a great looking Scirocco, but I can’t wait to see if VW will confirm they are bringing the R20 to the U.S.!
